“Pope Leo XIV A Pope with American and Latin Roots with conciliatory profile”
The priest Jorge Enrique Mújica, editorial director of the Zenit agency, highlighted the first gestures of Pope Leo XIV after his choice, and cataloged him as a Pope with a conciliatory profile. “His gestures show his emotion,” Mújica said, and highlighted how the attitude of the new Pontiff has been commented by those who knew him closely, including his family and friends in Peru.
Jorge Mújica recalled that, although born in the United States, Leo XIV chose to adopt Peruvian nationality. “Yes, he was born in the United States, has a French dad and a Spanish mother, but he wanted to be Peruvian,” said the priest. According to Mújica, the Pope worked as a missionary in that country and decided to identify with Latin culture.
During the interview with Carlos Zúñiga for Milenio Televisión, he addressed the ecclesiastical trajectory of the new leader of the Catholic Church, pointing out its conciliatory characteristics. Mújica considered that this profile was just what the cardinals were looking for in the conclave. “A conciliator Pope was sought,” he said, adding that the figure of Leo XIV responds to each of the elements that were intended for the papacy.
The priest also clarified the situation regarding an accusation of 2022, when a woman pointed to the then Cardinal for not having properly managed a complaint of abuse against a priest in Peru. Mújica pointed out that the process was treated both by civil and ecclesiastical justice, and that both instances determined that negligence was not committed.
