Pradejón: ‘To God what belongs to God’ shows the history of the tithe warehouse

Pradejón has a new tourist resource. The acquisition of a house located next to the church by the City Council, the demolition of the property and the excavations resulted in the recovery of the cellars of the tithe warehouse that belonged to the parish.

Open days were held at the end of September 2023. The musealization process culminated on March 23 with the opening of the facilities.

Those responsible for the archaeological study, Gabriel Ezquerro and Inko Zubillaga, offered yesterday in room 1 of the health center a talk titled ‘To God what belongs to God’ with explanations about the function of the tithe warehouse and the archaeological work. In addition, they showed the documentation used and materials recovered to reconstruct the history of this warehouse.

As in the rest of the parishes, the clergy collected the tax that consisted of a tenth of the locals’ harvest. The tribute was delivered in kind: wheat grain, barley, lambs… and they needed these places to collect them. What is preserved in Pradejón are the two underground wineries for wine production. The warehouse would be at ground level, at street level and has already disappeared.
