Carolina Leitao ends her militancy in the DC: “Political independence and domicile in the center-left”

The mayor of Peñalolén, Carolina Leitao, surprised this Saturday with her resignation from Christian Democratic Party (PDC or DC). Through an open letter, the municipal authority explained its decision, highlighting the importance of prioritizing community interests over partisan ones in the current Chilean political context.

In her statement, the mayor of Peñalolén emphasized her vision of politics as a tool to improve people’s quality of life and combat social inequities. He expressed his commitment to “good politics”one that seeks collective projects and the common good over individual interests.

Later, Carolina Leitao mentioned “the achievements achieved” during her tenure as mayor. “A project that has stood out for its focus on the development of innovative public policies with a high social impact. J.Together with a committed team, they have made progress in providing services and infrastructure on a human scale, positioning the commune as a reference in Chile in terms of local development“, he claimed.

Despite his resignation from the DC, The municipal authority assured the inhabitants of Peñalolén that “the path of progress will continue.” He recognized the work done by the former mayor and current governor Claudio Orrego, and expressed his confidence in the future leadership of José Ruiz as a candidate for mayor of the commune.

Finally, Carolina Leitao concluded her statement by reaffirming “its commitment to continue contributing from local politics or any other space, with the conviction that Chile can move towards a more just and secure life for everyone”.

The reactions in the DC to the resignation of Carolina Leitao

One of the first to react was the president of the Christian Democratic Party, deputy Alberto Undurraga. “We regret Mayor Carolina Leitao’s decision to resign from the Christian Democratic Party. Military is a voluntary and personal act. We will continue working to contribute collectively from the Christian Democratic Party to the construction of a better Chile,” he stated.

While, from the Christian Democratic Youth (JDC), they stated the following: “The resignation of Carolina Leitao is unfortunate news, despite the fact that we recognized leadership in her, apparently today individualistic and personal projects prevail, which clearly distance it from Christian Democratic principles. We reaffirm the support for the DC candidate, Ximena Llamin”.

In fact, in line with the above, Renata Vásquez, president of the JDC, pointed out that “today we learned of the resignation of Mayor Leitao, and although he could choose to be consistent and lead with his head held high, he decided to go out the window on an individual whim.
