Senator Castro calls on the Government to correct the “negative direction” of the economy in O’Higgins due to “alarming” performance

The O’Higgins region, after Arica and Parinacota, was one of those that registered the worst regional GDP growth indicators.

The Central Bank released this Tuesday the Regional Gross Domestic Product corresponding to the year 2023, where it was reported that there was growth in 11 of the 16 regions of the country, registering an increase of 0.2% of GDP for the national total.

However, the O’Higgins region recorded a 2.0% drop, which was the result of mining performance, which was partially offset by decreases in EGA and personal services. Household consumption registered a drop of 6.3% affected by consumption of non-durable and durable goods.

“According to the report delivered by the Central Bank on the Gross Domestic Product by region, O’Higgins is the second worst region in GDP growth in Chile, this is very serious, because it happens that after Arica and Parinacota in the extreme north, comes O’Higgins affected by mining and commerce and therefore has a decrease, with negative indicators in economic matters and also very negative consumption per household,” highlighted Senator Juan Luis Castro.

He explained that this is a sign that the economy in the region is “depressed” and on a “negative” path.

“I believe that this requires an effort from all sectors, from the central and regional governments and the municipalities, to be able to move forward with such a dire situation that, although it is affected by mining because it is a mining area, it affects all areas of the production that exists in our area. This stands as an alarm signal, it cannot be that O’Higgins is in second place in this sad ranking that leaves us below all the rest of the regions, seconding Arica with the worst economic indicators,” insisted the parliamentary.

Senator Castro reiterated his call to improve the figure: “We know that the economy is depressed, but an effort must be made by the government especially to be able to move forward with this bad news that the Central Bank gives us for the region.”
