The Government of Antioquia received the recognition Platinum Member of Global Zero Waste for the success of the implementation of the Zero Waste Management System in its facilities. The departmental administration It is the only one among the 32 in the country and one of the four public institutions in Colombia that holds this award.

According to the Ministry of Supplies and Services of the Government, the utilization indicator currently stands at 60%. From 2019 to 2023 they report that 263 tons of waste have been recovered, which has implied a saving of 12,000 cubic meters of water, 445,000 kilowatts/hour of energy, the planting of 2,857 trees, and avoiding sending 527 cubic meters of solid waste to the La Pradera landfill.

Regarding the award, this is what Diego Romero, technical director of Global Zero Waste, said: “The government of Antioquia has worked on separation processes, waste classification, recycling figures above 50%, organizational culture, processes, strategic direction, inclusion of new standards to its internal processes and procedures to achieve what it is today to be an institution and a building certified in zero waste.”

They argue that this achievement is due to the circular management that has been given to solid waste, based on the 9R strategies: reject, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, restore, remanufacture, recover and recycle.

This is what Gabriel Nanclares, Undersecretary of Supplies and Services of the Antioquia governorate, said about the management of materials and solid waste in the Antioquia governorate: “We have had more than five years of hard work with many colleagues, including ASEAR, who have supported us a lot to ensure that in five years or a little more we have a significant reduction in the carbon footprint and austerity in the use of paper and the ways in which we have been able to reduce garbage and recycling in the rest of the government”.

Finally, the government indicates that this recognition It is an example of the commitment and leadership that the institution has for the construction of a sustainable future.
