The murder of Jamundí councilor John Gil, on the afternoon of Saturday, April 27, once again demonstrated the fragility at the level of security that exists in Valle del Cauca in the face of actions of the violent.

This event once again called for a security council in which measures were established to prevent this type of crimes from occurring again.

The main measure is the offer of a reward of 30 million pesos for information that helps clarify the murder of councilor Jamundeño.

They also announced from the departmental government that they had sent a request to the National Protection Unit for the protection of the councilors. Added to this is the arrival of a special group of Prosecutor’s Office investigators to carry out investigations into the crimes that occurred in Jamundí and Tuluá.

In addition, mixed controls by the Police and Army will be increased in both municipalities.

Urgent call for security in Valle del Cauca

“He is the third councilor murdered in these first four months in our Department. I request the National Government, the President, Gustavo Petro, and the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, to, using their constitutional and legal powers, increase and intensify the fight against crime in Valle del Cauca“said the president.

Furthermore, he emphasized that “if we do not work together, primarily on this objective, we run the risk of risk that the department of Valle del Cauca goes down the unfortunate path that other territories in southwestern Colombia have taken and we cannot allow it.”

Requests from the Attorney General’s Office

In the last few hours, the Attorney General’s Office asked the Protection Directorate of the National Police and the National Protection Unit (UNP) to “take urgent measures to protect the life and integrity of the mayor of Tuluá, Valle del Cauca, Gustavo Adolfo Vélez Román, as well as various municipal administration officials and councilors threatened by the criminal gang La Inmaculada, which commits crimes in that municipality.”

In said communication, signed by the attorney general for Human Rights, Javier Sarmiento, he asked both entities for greater speed in the necessary risk level studies “to define and assign the protection measures through the emergency in each case and thus prevent the threats from being carried out.”

Finally, he requested a current report on the actions taken to address the risk faced by these officials.
