This Monday, April 29, the Animal Day only in Argentina and that is why it is a very particular day for Argentinians and especially for the domestic animals that are part of the family.
Animal Day is celebrated in Argentina every April 29 in commemoration of the death of Ignacio Lucas Albarracín, a lawyer who fought for animal rights and who for more than fifty years was first secretary and president of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals.
Albarracín was born on July 31, 1850 in Córdoba capital and was a close relative of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. TAfter obtaining his degree, he decided to dedicate his life to the defense of animals and led campaigns against cockfights, bullfights and pigeon shooting.
He was secretary of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals since its inception (1879) and succeeded Domingo Faustino Sarmiento as president, in 1885. Likewise, he was the main promoter of the National Animal Protection Law (No. 2,786) that was promulgated on July 25, 1891 and which was the legal basis that incorporated the International League of Animal Rights ( 1977) and the UN.
Albarracín died on April 29, 1926, in Lomas de Zamora, where he lived after having passed through Tigre and the Federal Capital. In honor of him, and at the initiative of the Animal Protection Society, Animal Day is commemorated in Argentina.
Unlike what happens in Argentina, Worldwide, Animal Day is celebrated every October 4, commemorating Saint Francis of Assisi.the Catholic saint who dedicated his life to serving not only his fellow men but also all animals.
World Animal Day began to be celebrated in 1929 at the initiative of the World Organization for Animal Protection at a congress held in Vienna. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared Saint Francis of Assisi the patron saint of animals and environmentalists.
