A recent supervision carried out by the Society of Aqueducts, Sewers and Cleaning of Huila AGUAS DEL HUILA SA ESP in the south of the department confirmed that the improvement works on the municipal aqueducts of Suaza and Altamira are progressing on the right track.

This involves the expansion and modernization of the aqueduct in Suaza, which will benefit 9,225 inhabitants, and the optimization of the adduction line of the aqueduct system, phase II of Altamira, which in turn will benefit 4,778 residents of that town. In Altamira the coverage is rural and urban, while in Suaza, only urban.

As explained by Yesid Rojas Peña, Huila Water Engineer, supervisor of these contracts, in the follow-up visit to these works, it was verified that, in Altamira, the execution progresses by 40% and in Suaza, by 90%.

Altamira dreamed of these works

María Camila Yusty Herrera, Manager of Public Companies of Altamira, who also made the tour of the works, highlighted their importance in improving the quality of life of Altamira residents.

Today we are here in review of the optimization works of the aqueduct of the municipality of Altamira, phase 2, in the company of the construction contractor, and Aguas del Huila. We are a municipality that has always had shortcomings due to the aqueduct, but thanks to God and the Government of Huila, this project benefits 4,700 inhabitants of the rural and urban areas of our municipality and we will have more water and better quality“, he claimed.

The works began in November 2023 and this year progress has been made since February. The deadline is until September 2024 and is 40% complete. The asbestos pipe, which is harmful to health, is replaced by PVC and ductile iron pipes, in 4,700 linear meters. Altamira dreamed of these works several years ago”, he added.

For his part, Yonni Vargas, Citizen Monitor of Altamira, highlighted that during the verification at the site where these optimization works are carried out, the benefit for the communities is verified.

Aqueduct expansion due to population growth in Suaza

Another of the community actors who confirmed the good progress of the works in the municipality of Suaza is Edgar Orlando Almario, manager of the town’s Public Services Company. “We made a work committee, with the presence of the auditor, the contractor engineers and Aguas del Huila as supervisor, to examine each of the progress we have made.”, he expressed.

We reached 100% of the adduction pipe, 99% of the storage tank, which optimizes 4 times more, and a new parallel drinking water treatment plant is being built, to optimize and expand the treated flow. This benefits the entire community, including sectors that were greatly affected by the scarce water supply.“said the official.

Finally, he pointed out that he hopes to be delivering this work in its entirety in 45 days. “Here there was an investment of $5.8 billion by the Departmental Government and $1.2 billion by the municipality. This work was necessary because the population dynamics of the municipality has been growing”, he expressed.

Meanwhile, Froilán Cabrera, a resident and businessman of Suaza, pointed out that the old aqueduct was designed for a smaller number of inhabitants than the municipality has today, since Suaza in recent years went from having 14,000 to 25,000 inhabitants.

We have seen the resident community that lives in Suaza double, and the aqueduct we have has become insufficient. Hence the need to expand it as is being done. They expanded 8 more inches of water, meaning that we were left with 14 inches of water, which allows the municipal administration to offer a constant flow of the precious liquid.”, he highlighted.
