“War and International Law” was the title of the Master Class given by Dr. Ximena Fuentes Torrijo, academic at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile.

With the participation of the academic and student community, the UCN Law School Coquimbo Headquarters held the traditional Inauguration Ceremony of the 2024 Academic Year, highlighting its history and achievements in more than 30 years of history.

The person in charge of opening this meeting was the School Director, Dr. Juan Pablo Severin Concha, who highlighted the contribution of those who make up the academic community in the face of the strategic challenges that have been imposed, adding that, at the beginning of a new year, the commitment to the institutional mission wishing students, teachers and members of the community the best for the period that begins.

In his speech he spoke to the students “we are convinced that the inauguration of the academic year is an excellent opportunity to motivate and encourage them to continue training. We are clearly aware that it is not an easy path, but it is a path that is worth it, not only for the possibilities that this career offers them in terms of achieving satisfactory living conditions and the development of personal projects, but it will also enable them to “contribute to the transformation of society, making it a better place, a fairer one.”

He added that, “our institutional educational project puts our students and their learning at the center. We have been working over the last few years to guarantee a quality educational offer, through the formation of an academic body of the highest standard, which researches in the respective disciplinary lines and perfects itself in the development of teaching skills. However, for this effort to translate into increasingly successful results, the personal commitment of each of our students to their training process is needed.”

Master class

A moment awaited by those in attendance was the Master Class, “War and International Law”, given by Dr. Ximena Fuentes Torrijo, academic at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile, and Doctor of Law at the University of Chile. Oxford, who was also recently appointed as Chilean Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In her presentation, the doctor made a historical tour of the great world conflicts, pointing out that “the topic chosen was a challenge, it is very motivating to contribute to new generations of lawyers having a more critical and creative perspective. Unfortunately we are living in darker times with a latent war of great dimensions, so they have to face that they have to live in a very complex world and that democracy is in crisis. We have seen that there are cases where it is preferred to sacrifice democracy to obtain security, we are back in a more authoritarian world, that is why it is important to tell them, first so that they value what democracy, freedom and peace are, because they are not given things. and for them to be agents of change and that at least in our country we can maintain these values.”

Adding that, “as a student you are grateful when you participate in a class that inspires you and that shows the other side of the facts, and especially in Law, which is such a dry discipline and so many rules must be studied. Many times no one explains to you why those rules exist, how we arrived at them and how they can be changed, sometimes they give you a given world and nothing is given because everything has a story, everything has a reason and everything can be changed.”
