This Saturday, April 27, the main internal sporting event of the University of Chile began, where members of its academic units compete in 11 sports disciplines throughout the year. The day featured soccer, foosball, volleyball, basketball and handball games in four campus venues.

The origin of this tournament dates back to the first half of the 20th century. It is the oldest university competition in the country and one of the oldest in Latin America, which has served as an example for other universities to replicate the initiative.

The start of the 2024 version of the TIF was held in four sports venues: the Juan Gómez Millas Sports Field, the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Physical Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary and Livestock Sciences, where exciting matches of basketball, handball, soccer, foosball and volleyball.

The Interfaculty Tournaments are held from April to November and the sports in competition are chess, athletics, basketball, handball, soccer (men), foosball (women), swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and rugby7.

Last year, the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences was crowned champion of this competition, followed by the Faculty of Economics and the Juan Gómez Millas Campus, with second and third place, respectively.

Upon the start of the competition, the coordinator of Sports Branches, Roberto Trujillo, made a positive assessment. “We have started without any major problems and with very good participation, it is clear that the community was waiting for the start of the competitions,” he indicated.

The coordinator of Sports Branches, Sebastián Andrade, also indicated that “we are putting all our efforts so that the competition goes impeccably and the fact of starting is already comforting. This first date the students were already able to play and demonstrate on the field what they have trained in their respective faculties.”

The Director of Sports and Physical Activity, Dylan Padilla, highlighted the importance of this competition for the University. “The TIFs are an excellent showcase to enjoy the sporting talent of the students and highlight the commitment of all the academic units of the University to the physical and mental well-being of their students,” he indicated.

For his part, the head of Sports Planning and Development of the Sports and Physical Activity Directorate, Lucas González, highlighted the work behind the competition. “We hope to have tournaments that stand out for their regularity and quality, avoiding suspensions and minimizing the difficulties that may appear. All the individual sports tournaments and almost all the team sports programming are already planned.”

Finally, Dylan Padilla expressed his wishes for the development of the TIF 2024. “We expect high participation and a very good level of competition in all sporting disciplines. But beyond the competitive, we hope that the tournaments fulfill a fundamental goal which is to promote professional development and the values ​​of sport such as fair play, teamwork and respect among all participants.”
