The new Talca prison, which has an investment of 56 million dollars, will house more than 2,000 inmates and will have a high school, among other features.
In November 2024, the new La Laguna de Talca prison will begin operating, located in the Aldea Campesina sector. The venue will begin its functions with the enabling two modules and a total of 424 inmates.
The Seremi of Justice of Maule, José González, announced that the administration of the penitentiary facility is in the bidding process, and once this process is resolved, the start-up of the new prison will proceed.
“The Ministry of Justice plans to begin operations in the last quarter of this year. The tender will be ready in the middle of the year, so the deadlines indicate that November would be a good date to start,” the authority said.
What will the new Talca Prison be like?
The new prison has a capacity to house 2,320 people, although its activation will be gradual. Initially, inmates will be transferred from the current Talca prison.
González explained that the main objective is to decongest the current facility, which today has a population of 920 inmates, which represents an overpopulation of 99%.
The new La Laguna prison is considered the most modern in South America, with a high investment in security that amounts to $56 million dollars.
Some of the characteristics that make it stand out above other penitentiary facilities are the following:
1. Technosurveillance system that includes more than 1,500 cameras and infrared sensors.
2. 14 security moduleswhich vary according to the degree of danger.
3. Safety strip with 8 surveillance booths and vehicle control.
4. Food production center for gendarmes and prisoners.

In addition to security, it has invested in reintegration programs, since this is one of the most notable focuses of this facility.
Therefore, consider the enabling workshops, a high school and an agricultural work center in some available hectares, which is still under evaluation.
