A second forest fire in less than two weeks has devastated the Vía Parque Isla Salamanca in the department of Magdalena, threatening the ecosystem of this natural reserve and the air quality in Barranquilla.

The commander of the Sitionuevo fire department, Margarita Velasco, reported that the fire originated in the Guaimaral sector and is spreading rapidly.

Commander Velasco stated that:

«The fire is very big. We are working with cutting tools, because we have another fairly high focus. “I already contacted the park brigade members and they informed me that they were also going to come to support us in the work.”

This new incident follows the large fire that occurred two weeks ago in the same area, significantly affecting the fauna and flora.

Especially the mangroves that are fundamental to this ecosystem.

The thick column of smoke generated by the fire is directed towards large areas of the Atlantic capital, putting public health at risk.

The community highlights the urgency of measures to contain the fire and protect this valuable natural reserve.
