Uncertainty for more than 40 families in Caleta Córdova: Pesca del Chubut ordered a “biological stop” for an indefinite period

On April 25, the head of the Naval Prefecture Comodoro Rivadavia, Senior Prefect Omar Miceli, was notified that the Chubut Fisheries Secretariat “is proceeding with a biological stoppage to determine the measures to be taken in order to carry out responsible management of the marine resource. zone IV – Comodoro Rivadavia, for vessels that carry out trawling fishing tasks in the port of Caleta Córdova”, which is why the fishing vessels are without activity, without specifying the reasons or the protected species.

The note issued last Thursday, signed by the general director of Fisheries Sebastián Cejas, and by the undersecretary of Fisheries of the province, Sergio Brandán, adds that “until a new administrative act is issued, the list of authorized vessels is void. sent by note No. 04-2024-DGP, requesting not to authorize the dispatch of vessels that operate in the jurisdictional waters of the Province of Chubut.”

Prawn protection

Almost in parallel with the Chubut decision, and at least with a certain species, the Secretary of Fisheries of Santa Cruz, Harold John Bark, announced yesterday that the cycle of protection of the Patagonian shrimp was ended with the signing of Resolution 61, that establishes management measures for the capture and processing of the resources of the San Jorge Gulf.

Since 2018, fishing was prohibited, based on an agreement with the province of Chubut and since then both provinces receive a social quota in compensation of 3,800 tons of shrimp but, when the agreement falls, the validity of that quota for both provinces also falls.

The Santa Cruz government seeks, based on this measure, to generate pressure to increase the quota and activity in ports and plants in its province, requiring its permit holders to download and process between 50 and 100 percent of their catches in Santa Cruz.
