Thanks to a citizen’s complaint, the authorities learned about and attended to the case of a 13-year-old Wayuu girl, who was sexually abused and forced to live with a man who gave 7 million pesos to her parents, in La Guajira.
After learning of the incident, the authorities arrested the man in the department of Santander, where he lived with the minor as if she were his romantic partner.
The National Police, in coordination with the Family Police Station and the Technical Investigation Corps, CTI of the Attorney General’s Office; They located him and notified him of the judicial measure against him.
He was identified as Orlando Meza Quiñones, 55 years old, native and resident of the municipality of Aratoca, in Santander. It was learned that he was wanted for the crimes of trafficking of children and adolescents, as well as abusive sexual intercourse with a minor under 14 years of age, aggravated in a homogeneous contest. It was also known that Orlando, allegedly in 2023, had traveled to La Guajira and paid the sum of money to later sexually abuse the minor. All with the consent of the girl’s family.
This tradition dates back decades in La Guajira and consists of the parents of girls exchanging them for money, livestock or farms.
