Speed controls on streets and avenues begin in Córdoba – Notes – Radioinforme 3

Starting this Thursday, the Municipality of Córdoba begins to control speeding on avenues and streets. In a first stage, the operations will be preventive in nature, notifying offenders through Ciudadano Digital (CiDi), without generating fines.

Speeding in the city is high and reaches 47% of drivers, according to a report carried out by Johns Hopkins University in conjunction with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), with data from December 2023. It is the second highest in Latin America after the city of Cali, with a prevalence of 56%.

From now on, the municipality will set up control operations in avenues and streets such as Dionisio Papin, Celso Barrios, Alem, Sabatini, Juan B. Justo, Fuerza Aérea, among other points that were detected.

There, speed controls will be carried out to promote road safety, warning about the risks to life of inappropriate conduct. It will be in charge of Traffic Police personnel.

The undersecretary of Urban Connectivity and Road Education, Florencia Barrionuevo, recalled in dialogue with Chain 3 that “the maximum speeds allowed are 40 km/h for streets and 60 km/h for avenues. Although financial fines are not yet applied, the corresponding code has already been established for when that stage arrives.”

Speed controls will be carried out with portable speedometers TruCam II, laser guns for international use and approved by the INTI. The equipment was recently donated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, thanks to the municipality’s agreement with the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety.

This equipment can accurately detect the speed of vehicles more than a kilometer away, also at night. Until now, similar controls are only carried out on provincial routes by the Highway Police.
