BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino received on Thursday in Paris the roadmap that the South American country must comply with to be a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), made up of thirty States.
The adoption of said strategic plan took place during Mondino’s participation in a meeting of the OECD ministerial council in which he stated that “a new process is opening that will allow us to return to international insertion,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry reported in a statement. .
The government of President Javier Milei, an ultra-liberal economist who took office in December, has expressed its determination to align Argentina with Western countries such as the United States, one of the main members of the OECD along with France, the United Kingdom and Germany. Some of the Latin American partners are Mexico and Chile.
During the president’s inauguration, Mondino announced that Argentina accepted the OECD’s invitation to join. This organization, founded in 1961, is made up of 38 States that share experiences and coordinate their economic and social policies.
The economic cooperation body states on its website that its objective is to promote policies that promote prosperity, equality, opportunities and well-being.
The ministerial council meeting is the highest level forum of said organization attended by ministers of Finance, Economy, Foreign Affairs and Trade from member and associate countries.
Prior to that meeting, Mondino met with the Secretary General of the OECD, Mathias Cormann, to whom he expressed the political importance of advancing the accession process for the Argentine government.
Mondino spoke with Cormann about the next steps to be taken in the process, which include the preparation of an initial memorandum by Argentina, the creation of an inter-ministerial coordination mechanism and the appointment of a high representative, among others, he said. the statement from the foreign ministry.
