For some time now, Chile has been presenting a considerable low birth rate, which was demonstrated in 2023, when the lowest number of births (173,920) was recorded in the last decade, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Under this scenario, in 2024 the trend seems to continue, since according to figures from said organization, In February of this year, 11,572 births were recorded, 19.5% less than the same month last yearwhich also marks a decrease in 9.1% when comparing the figures with the previous month of this year.

Regarding the mothers of babies who came into the world in February, the highest percentage corresponds to women between 30 to 34 yearswith the 30.5% of the total (3,525 live births), followed by the group of mothers between 25 to 29 years old, with 26.2% (3,028 live births). In addition, during this period, eight babies were recorded from mothers under 15 years of age and another three from women who were over 50 years of age.

Marriages are down and numbers of Civil Union Agreements (AUC) are up

On the other hand, the statistics provided by the INE also show the current panorama of marriages that have taken place in the country. In February 2024, a total of 7,472 marriages in Chilewhich translated into a drop of one 9.9% compared to the same month in 2023 and 12.5% ​​more than in January of this year.

For their part, they registered 1,107 Civil Union Agreements (AUC) in February, which marked an increase year-on-year of 74.6% and a monthly decrease of 2.9%.

In detail, the highest percentage of agreements were between couples of different sex (90.2%), while civil agreements between men corresponded to 4.8% of the total and AUC between women reached 5.1% of the total .

With respect to other data, in February of this year, 9,003 deaths, of which 4,639 were men (51.5%) and 4,364 were women (48.5%). In this way, it showed an increase of 1% compared to the same month of 2023.
