Cristina Kirchner negotiates with four opposition senators to bring down the Bases Law

Although he left the presidency of the Senate 5 months ago, Cristina Kirchner closely follows everything that happens in the Upper House, where it has its main bishops and where starting Tuesday the Bases Law and the fiscal package will begin to retrace its path, proposals that have half the approval of Deputies and are required by the Government for the signing of the May 25 pact with the governors.

The former president maintains permanent dialogues with the senators of Unión por la Patria (UxP), especially those from her closest circle such as Oscar Parrilli, Juliana Di Tullio and Anabel Fernández Sagasti. But no one lets any details be revealed, not even those who are involved in Cristina’s day-to-day life at the Patria Institute, meters from Congress.

After the half-sanction of Deputies, the former president sent her first message and using the speech of Deputy Vanesa Siley she made it clear that the measures promoted through both laws are part of “the political theories applied during 40 years of democracy and that, having failed again and again, they are reapplied, benefiting only those who evade and appropriate labor profitability.”

In the Kirchner powerhouse there is a lot of expectation that Javier Milei’s laws will be overturned without even going through any modification that would force the ruling party to return them to Deputies. Especially after the zoom that the senators had this Thursday in which there was agreement in tearing down the projects that the ruling party agreed upon with the dialogue opposition.

“The senators are very expectant and convinced that both the Bases Law and the fiscal package will not come out,” he assured Clarion an important source of Kirchnerism, which even anticipated that the Government “You’re going to get a big surprise” when the proposal is discussed on May 16 in the chamber, as is the intention of the ruling party given the possibility that it will have to return to the Lower House.

Pure Christianity knows that it has the 33 UxP senators tied up, but it is also aware that if the two projects pass the threshold of the general vote, another debate will begin. It already happened in Deputies where the people of Catamarca and San Juan voted in favor of the RIGI investment promotion regime due to the issue of mining companies.

Support for Corpacci and doubts by some senators

The pressure from the governor of Catamarca, Raúl Jalil, asking to accompany the measures of the Milei government had its effect on the Peronist bloc, especially after Lucía Corpacci, former governor and current senator for that province, ratified her rejection of the proposals that They promote everything from the elimination of the retirement moratorium to the reversal of the Income Tax.

The majority of senators participated in the virtual meeting of the bloc. “It was a good meeting and what stood out was the important support for Corpacci,” highlighted one of the senators who already anticipated his rejection of the Government’s proposals, but who left the door open to vote on an article.

But beyond Jalil’s statements, Guillermo Andrada, the other senator for Catamarca, has not yet made public a definition of the Base Law or the fiscal package, so his vote remains a question mark on the Senate stage.

While, Sergio Uñac, from San Juan, who is an opponent of Governor Marcelo Orrego, will also vote against the law in the general election.but it is not ruled out that they vote in favor of the RIGI, as they did, as the three Peronist deputies from that province did.

The idea of José Mayans, who commands the Peronist bench, is to bring together the senators on Monday to maintain unity and to advance the talks. Strictly speaking, they are going to listen to those legislators who intend to support some of the measures such as RIGI or Profits.

UxP defines its strategy to stop the law and opens negotiations with 4 opponents

It is clear that Unión por la Patria is not enough with the 33 senators that make up the bloc. It needs 4 senators to block the ruling party’s measures and at the same time generate a new political scenario in Congress.

In the coming days, the leadership of Peronism will seek to define its strategy and generate a consensus to stop this law. That’s why He has already begun negotiating with 4 opponents whose names were not revealed. because they do not want the dialogue to be frustrated. “They are not what the press can imagine,” warned an important Kirchnerism operator.

Until now, Peronism was gaining support from some senators with their own bloc such as José María Carambia and Natalia Gadano from Santa Cruz, and Mónica Silva from Rio Negro, who are now in a different situation because there are articles that interest them for their provinces.

For this reason, attention among the ruling party is focused on what the radicals Martín Lousteau and Pablo Blanco can do, who already voted against DNU 70/23, but also on Maximiliano Abad, who highlighted his decision that the Senate fulfill its review chamber mission. They are joined by Daniel Kroneberger from Pampa, who is also not aligned with the majority position of the radical bloc.
