Business owners received a notification from the city of San José to warn them that due to the Cinco de Mayo celebration, a section of Alum Rock Avenue will remain closed for several hours, including access to Highway 101.
“These are days that affect us. Every time they close the streets or the freeways it affects us a lot,” said Javier Sandoval, business owner.
Access to the highway is of utmost importance for this commercial area of the city.
“If all our customers do not come from the south, they come from the north to the store, and seeing the freeway closed, they continue passing through. I hope they continue to support us and come back another day when they can enter,” said Sandoval.
It is expected that there will also be street vendors who could be the great beneficiaries of this festival.
“If we see the positive side of this that there are events like the ones we will have this weekend in San José, this not only attracts our local community. It attracts many people from outside who are going to come visit our community and this will give many more visibility to small businesses and the recommendation here would be that all businesses try to open and be ready to receive more people,” said Jesús Flores. , spokesperson for the Latino Business Foundation Silicon Valley.
Overall, the Cinco de Mayo festivities will be a big boost to the local economy.
“It is obvious that there are some impacts, especially when some type of street is closed, but if we see the other side, which is the economic impact, the creation of income and the sales that will be made in small businesses,” Flores explained.
The event organizers have been in communication with merchants to notify them of the hours and streets that will be closed during this event.
