Santiago de Chile, May 6 (EFECOM).- Authorities from the eight member countries of the Regional Tax Cooperation Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean (PTLAC) met at the ECLAC headquarters, in Santiago, and agreed this Monday to transfer to Chile the pro tempore presidency of this initiative.

The PTLAC seeks to build a space for dialogue between member Ministers of Treasury, Economy and Finance to facilitate tax cooperation at the regional and international level, reduce inequalities and promote growth.

“The PTLAC will allow us as a Latin American region to have a more active voice in debates at a global level and also to be able to incorporate the agreements that are generated within our own tax administrations,” said the Chilean Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel. , who received the position from Colombia, at the head of the platform during the period 2023-2024.

For his part, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the United Nations organization that acts as the Technical Secretariat of the PTLAC, highlighted the importance of this initiative and stressed that It serves “to collaborate and compare technical notes on tax reforms, both within countries and on international agendas.”

As detailed by the executive secretary through the official note, there are four countries that showed interest in joining the platform, although he did not specify which nations are interested.

In a joint statement, the PTLAC asked the pro tempore Presidency to prepare a plan to advance the development of tools that facilitate tax cooperation at the regional and international level and called to “explore alternatives” to finance measures against the climate crisis.

Likewise, the platform highlighted the need to support the proposals put forward by Brazil in its G20 presidency and move towards “a progressive international tax system, which complements the efforts of the countries of the region in mobilizing resources to expand fiscal space.” .

The PTLAC was born in July 2023 after ministers of Treasury, Economy and Finance and officials from 16 countries signed the Cartagena de Indias Declaration during the first Ministerial Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean for an inclusive, sustainable and equitable Global Taxation. EFECOM
