Córdoba will guard the documentary legacy of Julio Anguita

Córdoba (EFE).- The personal archive of the first mayor of Córdoba during democracy and leader of IU and the PCE, Julio Anguita González, will be preserved in the Municipal Archive of Córdoba after the donation to the city by his widow, María Agustina Martín Caño, and her children, Ana, Juan Antonio and Carmen.

The contribution of the documentary legacy of Anguita, who died on May 26, 2020, “comes to complete the documentation that we already have about this mayor of Córdoba in the Municipal Archive,” said its director, Ana Verdú.

In his opinion, this official documentation does not reflect aspects that are included in the donation that will be received, which is why he considers it “a great contribution.”

Ana Verdú has pointed out that in the Municipal Archive there is a lot of documentation from Anguita’s time “because he was politically very active. He was also to set up a new democratic system.” Although she has emphasized that “this personal documentation is undoubtedly very important to define the figure, to define the character from another prism, and all of his interests, all of his thoughts are actually reflected there.”

The legacy is made up of 38 archival folders, thematic dossiers, audio and video recordings and photographs. They include personal correspondence “with people as relevant as Saramago and Antonio Gala. Also from other prominent figures in literature and politics of their time,” as highlighted this Tuesday in the presentation of the transfer by the Deputy Mayor of the Presidency of the Córdoba City Council, Miguel Ángel Torrico (PP).

handwritten notebooks

After the corresponding administrative processing that is expected to be completed in mid-June, handwritten notebooks and work sheets will also enter the Municipal Archive, a bibliographic fund that will arrive previously cataloged by María Agustina Martín, although in the municipal unit it will have to adapt to international standards to make it available to researchers, according to its director.

“We believe that it will be important bibliographic content for our archive because researchers from that time will be able to use it. And with first-hand testimonies to learn about the contemporary history of Spanish politics at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century through the correspondence and works of Julio Anguita González,” Miguel Ángel Torrico stressed.

Anguita’s widow has highlighted that she is “a life usufructuary of my husband’s legacy, but her children are his legal heirs.” Everyone has agreed on the transfer to the city of the documentary collection of the former mayor of Córdoba.

Socialization of knowledge

María Agustina Martín has shown that “Julio always shared everything in life. And he always talked about the socialization of knowledge, he said that it was his desire for everything to be known. That everything was shared, in fact he gave everything in life.

It is “his personal archive of which he was also very proud. That is why I am more proud because it honors his memory that we give it up for anyone who wants to investigate.”

The transfer includes letters sent to him by citizens and the one written by his students when they left teaching to join the Mayor’s Office of Córdoba. In addition to other correspondence such as handwritten congratulations from Antonio Gala and Rafael Alberti after his re-election in 1983 by absolute majority. Or on the occasion of the death of his son, the journalist Julio Anguita Parrado, in the Iraq War. “From ordinary citizens as well as significant people,” Martín stated.

Among these are that of the then president of the Government, José María Aznar, and of the Episcopal Conference, Antonio María Rouco Valera. And others like José Saramago and Pilar del Río. EFE
