“It is a recognition of the mayors and councilors of the smallest towns”

Jorge Loyo, mayor of Anguciana, has held the presidency of the Rioja Federation of Municipalities since 2023. He led a candidacy closed by consensus between the different political groups. On June 9 he will collect the La Rioja Medal on behalf of the FRM.

– Yes, they often ask us that. Let’s say that we do this hidden work, advising and helping mayors, looking at many orders… Especially for smaller municipalities, which often cannot count on a secretary more than one or two days a week.

– And in La Rioja almost all the municipalities are small.

– 17% of Rioja municipalities have less than one hundred inhabitants. A secretary comes once or twice a week, but there are many orders, many subsidies, and they need support. But we also work with the big ones, for example, on equality plans. We try to always be at the side of our mayors.

– What does receiving the Medal of La Rioja mean for the Federation?

– Above all, a pride. And a recognition to the mayors and councilors of the smaller towns, who before going to work get up early to check the water tank, turn on the heating in the schools or check if the light has worked… It is a recognition of municipalism , to the mayors and councilors who are involved in their localities, taking time away from their families to work for their town and for La Rioja. That’s what unites us all.

– And the political colors?

– In the Federation there have never been colors, we have always been very united. There is a lot of cordiality and in the end we have many common problems: accessibility, lighting, regulations… And in small municipalities, with fewer staff, the day-to-day difficulties are greater.
