(Tuesday, May 7, 2024). The Government is evaluating ending the subsidies granted by the Department of Social Prosperity, according to statements by the director of the entity, Gustavo Bolívar.

This measure, promoted by President Gustavo Petro, aims to implement a new model focused on promoting entrepreneurship and productive projects among the most vulnerable sectors.

In the words of Bolívar, “It’s not that subsidies could end, but that they have to end”.

He argues that it has been proven that subsidies fail to lift people out of poverty and that it is necessary to transform them into opportunities for sustainable development.

Under this vision, resources allocated to subsidies would be redirected as seed capital to promote productive projects. The idea is to associate people who currently receive subsidies and train them so that they can become entrepreneurs.

The director of Social Prosperity highlighted the importance of this transition towards a more proactive and productive approach: «The president has ordered me to convert subsidies into productive projects, That is, associating the people who receive the subsidies so that we can give them seed capital and we can be producing entrepreneurs instead of people subject to a transfer.

Although no specific details have been provided on how this transformation will be carried out, presidential guidelines on the matter are expected to be released in the coming days.
