Independiente Medellín played its best game so far this year in Peru. Without the obligation of the League on top and only focused on the Copa Sudamericana, those led by Alfredo Arias were immensely superior to César Vallejo and reflected it on the scoreboard with a resounding 5-1, which marked their second victory on Peruvian soil (in 2017 he had beaten Melgar in the same tournament, 2-1).

Very early, the red team went ahead on the scoreboard through Brayan León, 15 minutes into the game. However, an error by goalkeeper Éder Chaux, who dropped a ball in the area, allowed Jairo Vélez’s Peruvian team to equalize at 21′. But the local team would also make mistakes in defense and after an error by the Colombian Geisson Perea, Brayan León would achieve his double before the end of the first half.

In the second half, DIM controlled the game from start to finish and thanks to the management of Miguel Monsalve the other players let go. The third goal came after an excellent filtered pass from Monsalve to Ménder García (59′), who defined correctly. Monsalve’s inspiration had no ceiling and at minute 73 ‘the spirit of Messi or Maradona possessed him, because he started from the middle of the field, dribbled past four rivals and finished from the outside edge to make the score 4-1 . So far it is the best goal of the Copa Sudamericana.

The final goal was the work of Baldomero Perlaza (79′), who took advantage of a through ball from Brayan León to make the fans who accompanied Poderoso at the Mansiche Stadium in Trujillo and those who watched the game on television celebrate.

The play and goals of the Antioquia team suggest that the 7-year streak without qualifying for the round of 16 in international tournaments is about to end. Since 2016, Medellín has not advanced to this stage. On that occasion, also in the Copa Sudamericana, they beat Santa Cruz of Brazil, and lost in the quarterfinals against Cerro Porteño.

DIM will visit Defensa y Justicia, next Tuesday, May 14, and will close the group stage against Always Ready at the Atanasio Girardot, on the 29th of this month.

The last time Medellín had scored 5 goals was in the classic against Nacional, on December 3 of last year (5-0). Furthermore, this becomes one of the club’s most important victories at the international level and the seventh for a Colombian team, which scores 5 or more goals, away from home in a competition of this nature.
