Hundreds of students from the municipality of Ciénaga, Magdalena, were unable to attend classes this Tuesday due to a protest by teachers over the delay in the payment of their salaries. The educators report that they are owed more than three months of salary.

In response to this situation, the Subdirectorate of the Magdalena Education Workers Union (Edumag Ciénaga) called for a peaceful rally at outside the municipal palace to express their discontent with the local authorities. The main reason for the protest is the failure of the municipal administration, headed by Luis Fernández Quinto, to pay the retroactive payment corresponding to the months of January and February 2024. The Ministry of Education had initially set April 30 as the deadline for payment, but the date has been postponed several times, first to May 3, then to May 6, and finally to May 8.
Faced with this series of non-compliance, the teachers decided to take direct action measures and announced that they will maintain the protests until the full payment of the owed salaries is made.
