The National Tax and Customs Directorate DIAN, with its Tax and Customs Police, and the Attorney General’s Office, They carried out three (3) search and seizure procedures in the Comuna 8 neighborhood of Cali, which allowed the seizure of 7,646 jutes of merchandise valued at $72,000 million pesos.
This blow to smuggling was possible thanks to the information provided by citizens and the joint work of several months between the Fiscal and Customs Police of the DIAN and the Attorney General’s Office of the Nation, specifically through the Support Structure (EDA) in Cali.
Once in the country, these products were taken to Comuna 8, which is part of a recognized industrial sector in Cali. The general director of the DIAN, Luis Carlos Reyes, pointed out that “Smuggling is not only an evasion of customs taxes, but also resources that are taken away from health, education and even access to justice in the country.”
For his part, the director of Management of the Fiscal and Customs Police, Colonel Yorguin Orlando Malagón Hernández, described the operation as “a resounding blow to multicrime organizations dedicated to smuggling.” The DIAN Tax and Customs Police invites citizens to promptly report any irregularity or suspicion regarding the illegal marketing of merchandise.

The study shows that technical smuggling due to under-invoicing is the main modality of this crime, with an annual average of $6,234 million dollars (2018-2022) and a 90% participation in the total estimated smuggling.
Actions in the fight against smuggling
- Since August 2022, Dian has seized merchandise valued at more than $1 billion in smuggling control actions.
- In 2022, the entity carried out 39,409 seizures of merchandise valued at more than $440,000 million. In 2023 there were 33,700 arrests worth $526,000 million and, so far in 2024, there have been 10,406 arrests worth more than $133,000 million.
