Mr. Principal:
The National Institute of Seismic Prevention, Inpres, dependent on the Ministry of Public Works of the Nation, was created 52 years ago, by national law 19,616, on May 8, 1972. Although it is worth mentioning that the true origin of the institute dates back several years ago, after the earthquake of January 15, 1944, which caused more than 10,000 fatalities and destroyed 80% of the existing buildings in the province of San Juan. This natural catastrophe, the largest in Argentina, was the turning point in the country’s seismic history, generating great social and scientific challenges. In response to this event, the national government created the San Juan reconstruction council “Concar”, which later became Inpres, a scientific-technical organization that assumes the task of seismic prevention in the country. Its essential functions are the installation and maintenance of two seismic monitoring networks, the National Network of Seismological Stations and the National Network of Accelerographs, which have grown and developed throughout history. The objective of monitoring allows us to evaluate the seismic danger of our territory and draft the Argentine Regulation for Earthquake-Resistant Constructions, which has evolved over time.
