Another reaction that was made known was that of Irene Montero, Spanish politician and psychologist, candidate of the Podemos party in the European elections: “All support to the people of Colombia and its president Gustavo Petro. The reactionary coup leaders will not prevail over democracy or the popular will. Hang in there and move forward.”
These reactions came after Petro said: “The coup began. “It was very difficult in a country like Colombia for the rules of the democratic game to be accepted.” According to the president, the actions of the National Electoral Council, which will study a presentation by two magistrates that recommends to file charges against him for the alleged irregular financing of his campaign, would be aimed at causing progressivism to leave power before 2026.
In his statements on Wednesday, the president called on civil society to express their support for the Government in mobilizations, since they cannot “make that mistake” of letting the “oligarchs” return to power “through a coup d’état.” ”.
He indicated that in the event that the Constitution is violated to remove him, “we must organize the coordinators of popular forces in each municipality, in each neighborhood, in each village, in each indigenous council, in each Afro-descendant community.” Thus, he called for mobilizations and to “peacefully surround the centers of power in Colombia, until constitutional order is restored in this country.”
