Health Professionals these days « UCN News up to date – Universidad Católica del Norte

Opinion column, Alejandro Cerda Sanhueza, Director of the Department of Theology of Coquimbo.

During the course of the week, the day of Kinesiologists and Nutritionists and on May 12, the day of Nurses, have been commemorated. And surely from some other health professional. And it is perhaps important to remember them, their work and professional performance. Give relevance to the importance they have in the health field, as they enrich our conception of being healthy, a more comprehensive understanding of health, and account for the importance of other factors that not only help to improve it, but also, and More importantly, to prevent ailments or other illnesses.

For a long time it was thought that the health service was practically the monopoly of a single profession, that of doctors. Without losing their prominence, time and scientific advances, they have shown that they are not the only ones that make a good health system possible, and that an infinite number of technicians and other professions are required that allow for more comprehensive care.

Many of these professions have developed enormously through their respective professional associations, which have allowed better empowerment and diversification of their health functions, and this is how we can see that they can also hold decision-making positions that are key to health management.

We have excellent training schools in the region for these and other health professions, and that continues to be a privilege for users, because they constantly encounter new generations of professionals in training who are at the service of patients, learning with them. and putting their skills at our disposal.

In the context of the pandemic they were called heroes, but since we have short memories, we have already forgotten the role they played in those and other critical moments. How many friends and family members were cared for, accompanied by these health professionals, and how many we still retain their names, faces and gestures of hope. They are not heroes, nor people from another planet, they are people who consistently and deeply try to live a vocation of service and help, and they do so with professionalism and a humanistic sense. Good for them, because that fulfills them and ennobles them, good for us, who are in good hands, with people who improve our quality of life.
