This Saturday, Universidad Católica celebrated an important victory by beating Universidad de Chile 2-1 at the National Stadium, ending the 13-match unbeaten streak of its classic rival in the 2024 National Championship.

The match began with great intensity and a notable presence of the public that cheered both teams. Universidad de Chile quickly took the lead with a goal from Leandro Fernández in the 9th minute, taking advantage of UC’s confusion after a goal disallowed by Kagelmacher for offside in the 4th minute.

Despite the early blow, those led by Tiago Nunes showed resilience and managed to tie thanks to a goal from Alexander Aravena in the 22nd minute, whose shot hit both posts before entering the goal.

The tie gave Universidad Católica the necessary momentum to take control of the match, locking its rival in its area and forcing Castellón to make several interventions. The break came at a crucial moment for those led by Gustavo Álvarez.

When the match resumed, UC came out with greater inspiration and gained the definitive advantage with a spectacular bicycle kick by Fernando Zampedri in the 61st minute, elevating it to third place in the club’s all-time scoring table.

Universidad de Chile tried to respond by advancing its lines, but Maximiliano Guerrero wasted a clear opportunity in the 74th minute, sending the ball over the goal with an empty goal.

Despite the final efforts of Gustavo Álvarez’s team, they were unable to change the result and lost their undefeated record against their classic rival. With this victory, Universidad Católica reached 24 points, distancing itself four points from the leader.

Universidad Católica’s next game will be on Saturday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. against Cobreloa at the Santa Laura stadium. For its part, Universidad de Chile will host Ñublense at the National Stadium on Sunday the 26th at 5:30 p.m.
