Who won yesterday’s IPL match? Royal Challengers Bengaluru handed a stunning 27-run defeat to the Chennai Super Kings on Saturday and qualified for the playoff stages of IPL 2024. The seemingly improbable qualification came after RCB lost 7 out of their first 8 games and came back strongly to win the last 6 matches.

Top highlights of last night’s RCB vs CSK match:

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and asked the home side to bat first at the MA Chinaaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. The experienced pair of Virat Kohli and Faf Du Plessis opened the innings for RCB and put on an opening partnership of 78 runs to provide an excellent start to the innings for Bengaluru. Later on, some quick fire knocks by Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green, along with cameos from Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell, helped RCB put on a score of 218 runs in their 20 overs. In order to qualify for the playoffs though, RCB needed to win the match by 17 runs or more, for edging out CSK in terms of net run rate. This meant that both teams were looking at the target of 201 runs instead of 218.

The pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra started the innings for CSK but the innings failed to get going as Gaikwad was dismissed in the 1st over of the match by Glenn Maxwell. Soon afterwards, Daryl Mitchell also departed on 4, taking CSK to a score of 19/2 in just 2.2 overs.

Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra stabilized the CSK innings for a while and provided some much needed hope to the yellow side. However, Rahane was dismissed on 33 (off 22 balls) while trying to play an attacking shot against Lockie Ferguson in the 10th over of the match. CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals from there on and the team were 129 for six wickets at the 15 over mark.

At this point, CSK had MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja on the crease and required 72 runs from the last 5 overs in order to qualify for the playoff stages. The duo took the offensive against the RCB bowlers and almost pulled off an impossible seeming run chase with just 17 runs requiring off the last over of the match.

MS Dhoni began the last over with a bang as well, hitting first ball over the boundary line for a six but Yash Dayal came back strongly to take the wicket of CSK veteran in the very next delivery. The match still seemed evenly poised at the end with a well settled Jadeja (42 off 22 balls) requiring 10 runs off the last 2 deliveries but the left handed batter failed to gauge the two slower balls from Yash Dayal which resulted in RCB winning the match and making it to the playoffs comfortably.
