The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development allocated resources of $2,000 million to strengthen the program ‘She feeds the world’, in collaboration with the PepsiCo Foundation and Care Colombia, program aims to improve food security and nutrition of rural households, while reducing gender inequality in the agricultural communities of the department of Nariño.

The investment will head to the second phase of the program, that seeks to adapt plots in agricultural areas for food production, promoting a gender approach that turns women into protagonists of rural development.

John Jairo Hueje, director of capabilities at the Ministry, highlighted the importance of this public-private alliance and highlighted the crucial role of women in peasant agriculture.

“This alliance is transcendental because we work hand in hand with local producers and international companies, putting women at the center of sustainable agricultural development,” said Hueje.

The second phase of the program will benefit producer associations in Pasto, Ipiales, Pupiales and Gualmatán, reaching 7,320 potato and vegetable growers, Additionally, the associations will receive technical assistance to implement good agricultural practices and improve the management of their crops.

María Paula Cano, director of the PepsiCo Colombia Foundation, noted that: “We have witnessed the value and potential of rural women and their fundamental role in food security. This program not only empowers women, but also sows progress in Nariño.”
