School students in Chocó denounce that there are no teachers: “We are still in the same situation”

The students of the Santa María La Nueva Del Darién Educational Institution in Unguía, in Chocó, came out to protest because they denounce a lack of teachers. There are 16 teachers missing: two for biology and chemistry, four for primary school, four for computer science, two for social sciences and political science, two for Spanish, two for English and mathematics.

In dialogue with Mañanas Blu, with Camila Zuluaga, the representative of this school, Fabián Teherán, assured that the reason for the protest is because the situation does not change, since for years they have had to wait for the Ministry of Education of the department to “They send them teachers” and if new ones arrive, in December they leave again and that’s how it is every year.

Tehran said that they have already spoken with the Secretary of Education, Yina Reales, when the departmental development plan was presented. On that occasion, the students told her about the problem and she “promised that she was going to send the teachers and it’s time and nothing.”

“We miss classes, since we must not allow them to enter the school to be able to do more (…) The students are coming to the institution every day, we enter. What is happening is that we are making a call so that the Secretariat can see that we are waiting for the teachers that they have to send us; We need six teachers. The Icfes tests are coming, we have not received a mathematical physics class this year. So, if we continue, if we let them teach classes and we continue in the same classes, they will never listen to us,” he pointed out.

In this regard, the Secretary of Education of Chocó, Yina Reales, responded, indicating that the department needs around 120 teachers, which makes the problems much more acute in remote regions. As she said, what they are doing now is “putting out fires and plugging holes” in the face of the crisis they face.
