A 67-year-old man was the target of cybercriminals this Thursday, around noon, when he was in the downtown area of the city of Santa Fe.
The victim was sitting in the bar of a prestigious hotel in the provincial capital when he decided to download the application of an international bank on his cell phone.
As soon as the software installation was completed, he received a notification through Instagram in the name of the credit institution. He never suspected anything strange, but in reality it was a trap in which thieves had impersonated the bank’s identity.
The maneuver is carefully prepared and executed. It has already claimed dozens of victims. The message invited the user to register to participate in the draw for a prefabricated home.
By clicking on the offered link, the phone opened a site that amazingly simulated the login page to the bank’s application.
By entering username, password and token, the victim did nothing other than hand over all the keys to his profile to the criminals, who in a few minutes took a significant sum of money in dollars from the account.
When the scammer realized it, it was too late. He went to complain to the bank branch about an alleged error in the system and there they informed him of the blow he had suffered.
The case is in the hands of personnel from the Investigative Police, at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
