Phenomena such as El Niño, in which temperatures in the country tend to rise, unleash other consequences such as the increase in dengue cases in Cundinamarca. Currently, according to figures from the Ministry of Health, there are 5,780 active cases in the department, of which only 0.5% are classified as severe dengue.

Although the numbers have been increasing in the department, the fatality rate has been controlled thanks to the continuous and systematic monitoring of cases of dengue and severe dengue, in accordance with the processes established for notification, collection and analysis of data. This allows the generation of timely, valid and reliable information, essential to guide the prevention and control measures of this event.

The municipalities with the highest number of registered cases are: La Mesa (745 cases), Fusagasugá (1,060 cases), El Colegio (396 cases), La Vega (357 cases) and Cachipay (294 cases).

“In the context of the El Niño phenomenon and given water rationing, the collection of water in cans has been encouraged. However, it is important to constantly wash the containers where the collection is made to prevent the birth of larvae that will later generate the mosquito. The mosquito reproduces in clean water, which is why these containers must be covered,” were some of the recommendations given by the Secretary of Health of Cundinamarca, Neidy Tinjacá.

The representative of the Health Ministry also explained that citizens who present symptoms such as high fever, joint pain and persistent retro-ocular pain should go to the nearest health service. Dengue is not a fatal disease, unless the patient has underlying diseases that aggravate his condition; however, necessary care must be taken.
