This year there will be no May 25 patriotic parade. The classic celebration will not have its edition this 2024 and it was announced by the Ministry of Education this Thursday. Through a statement, they reported that this decision was made within the framework of the inclement weather that San Juan is experiencing. Given the possibility of precipitation and snowfall, the Government reversed it.

As they expressed in this statement, “the measure taken is preventive to protect the health of citizens, especially the boys and girls who were going to participate in it.”

In turn, the National Meteorological Service and Civil Protection had already warned about the cold front that is crossing the province and about the probability of precipitation and snow for this Saturday, May 25.

It is worth mentioning that everything was already ready to carry out the parade, which was going to take place in the streets of the capital, more precisely at the intersections of Ignacio de la Roza street, between Mendoza street and Leandro Alem avenue. Traffic was going to be interrupted from 7 a.m. on Saturday and a vehicle cleaning operation was going to be carried out on Friday night. In addition, detours for buses that passed through the area had already been considered, but the decision made by the Government was reversed.

Among the activities that were going to be carried out was the raising of the National Pavilion in Plaza 25 de Mayo, led by the Municipality of Capital, accompanied by the councilors and secretaries of the capital commune. The San Juan Police Music Band participated. In line with the Province, from the Capital, they reported that they have also suspended their schedule of activities for this Saturday.

At 12 noon it was going to be the start of the traditional civic-military parade in the streets, where hundreds of San Juan men and women were going to gather to watch the children and adults parade. There, schools, cultural institutions, communities, military, security and police forces and the Provincial Penitentiary Service, the Argentine Gaucha Confederation and the San Juan Gaucha Federation were going to participate.

When was the last suspension?

According to records, the last suspension of this parade was in 2020, when the province was going through the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, it was the first time it had been suspended after more than 30 uninterrupted years of the patriotic parade. Due to quarantine provisions issued by the government, headed by Alberto Fernández at the national level and Sergio Uñac at the provincial level, no celebrations or commemorations were held in schools, institutions and homes.

“It was never suspended; There was never a reason for it. The military forces, the institutions, the students; everyone gave the present. For us, it was a week full of work and enjoyment. It is a date full of emotion and love for our country. A date to enjoy with the family,” said the head of the Ceremonial and Protocol Directorate at that time, Alberto Allende, to the newspaper La Provincia in 2020.

What will happen in the other departments?

Following the guidelines of the suspension of the parade, some departments of Greater San Juan chose not to carry out their activities on May 25. This is the case of Chimbas, from the department’s press, they reported that the “Raíces Patrias” Fair will be suspended. Aromas and Flavors of Chimbas”. It was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the El Fruto olive oil factory, located on Rodríguez Street, 600 meters east of Necochea, El Mogote.

In the case of Saint Lucia, activities will also be suspended. An event was going to be held in commemoration of the 214th anniversary of the May Revolution, which had a date and place for this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the vicinity of the departmental plaza of Santa Lucía.
