Santa Clara.–The prominent Cuban intellectual Abel Prieto Jiménez received, this Thursday, in a solemn ceremony held at the “Marta Abreu” Central University of Las Villas, the title of honorary doctor in Philological Sciences, in recognition of his outstanding intellectual career and in defense of Cuban culture.

The rector of the house of higher studies, doctor of science Luis Antonio Barranco Olivera, read the resolution through which the academic status was conferred, in which the imprint of the current president of the House of the Americas stood out.

The official of the Central Committee of the Party, Luis Morlote Rivas, a guest professor of this institution, was in charge of reading the words of praise written by the poet and ethnologist Miguel Barnet.

Barnet recognized in Abel Prieto the greatness of his “literary work, which achieves a masterful communion between introspection in the history of everyday life and poetic fiction.” He highlighted the record of service in favor of the nation of someone who “has bequeathed us a vocation of sacrifice and fortitude,” while highlighting in his essay the ability to achieve a “conjunction of Martí’s cosmic and political thought, with the vision oblique of Lezama and the Marxist optics of Gramsci, which makes him a lucid analyst of social reality and the role of the organic intellectual.

The author of The Flight of the Cat thanked the words of affection, and said he felt very honored. At the end of the ceremony – which was attended by the first secretary of the Party in Villa Clara, Osnay Miguel Colina Rodríguez, as well as other directors, professors and students of the Central University – he spoke about hegemonic cultural colonization and the role of the education and the teaching of history, as shields in the fight to safeguard national culture.
