Matthew Perry, known American actor, died on October 28, 2023 at the age of 54. According to the report of the Los Angeles County Coroner, the cause of death was acute effects of ketamine, along with other contributing factors such as drowning, coronary artery disease, and effects of buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder. Perry’s death was ruled accidental.
A police source declared to PEOPLE that the investigation into Perry’s ketamine death is “close to completion” and that authorities believe “multiple people” should face charges. However, the final decision on whether charges are filed or not rests with the United States Attorney’s Officewho responded with “no comment” on Tuesday, June 25.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation in December, after the coroner’s report was published. According to the police source, the LAPD has been collaborating with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Postal Inspector to determine the source of the ketamine that led to Perry’s death.
In December, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office concluded its investigation into the actor’s death. However, in May, the LAPD began investigating in the new light shed by the coroner’s report, focusing on who might be responsible for the distribution of the substance.
At the time of his death, Matthew Perry was receiving ketamine infusion therapy. Perry addressed his struggles with addiction in her autobiographical book “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” published a year before his death.
In that book, Perry recounted: “I wanted to share it when I was safe from falling back to the dark side again. He had to wait until he was pretty sure he was sober, and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction, to write all this down. I was pretty sure it would help people if I did.”.
The television community and the actor’s fans received the news of his death with great dismay. Perry rose to fame for his role as Chandler Bing in the television series “Friends”a smash hit in the 1990s and early 2000s.
