Pope Francis has named this May 24 to Monsignor Édgar Aristizábal Quinteroas bishop of the diocese of Duitama-Sogamosowho since June 2017, had been serving as bishop of the diocese of Yopal.

As of March 3, 2023, this ecclesiastical jurisdiction located in the Boyacense plateau of Colombia, was being administered by Father Óscar Iván Pinzón Bonilla, by designation of the College of Consultants. This, after the appointment of Monsignor Misael Vacca Ramírez as archbishop of Villavicencio.

Gratitude to God

Once the news of his appointment was known, Monsignor Aristizábal expressed his gratitude to God for the gift of life and vocation, as well as, expressed his closeness and loyalty to Pope Francis for the new designation.

I assume the new mission with faith and humility, hoping to serve with responsibility and joy this portion of God’s people. My eternal gratitude to all my brothers of the diocese of Yopal; priests, deacons, religious men and women, and lay faithful in general, with whom I have walked and experienced the love and mercy of God,” observed the prelate.

About Monsignor Édgar Aristizábal

He was born on December 2, 1965 in Cartago – Valle (Colombia). He was ordained a priest on December 7, 1990 for the diocese of Carthage.

He studied Philosophy at the Major Seminaries of Cali and Cartago and Theology at the Major Seminaries of Manizales and Cartago. He graduated in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome; parish priest in several parishes of Cartago.

Pastoral assignments

He has held the following positions: Rector of the Ecce Homo Sanctuary of Ricaurte (Colombia); professor and rector of the Minor Seminary of Carthage; rector of the Major Seminary of Carthage; ecclesiastical advisor of Cursillos de Cristiandad; member of the Presbyteral Council, the Pastoral Council and the College of Consultants of the Diocese of Cartago; director of the Department of Doctrine of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia (2009-2011).

He was chosen by Pope Benedict XVI as titular bishop of Castra de Galba and auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Medellín on May 4, 2011receiving episcopal ordination on the following June 4. On May 4, 2017 He was named by Pope Francis as bishop of the diocese of Yopaltaking canonical possession of this ecclesiastical jurisdiction on June 17, 2017.
