Salmon workers announce massive mobilizations against ECMPOs in Chiloé

On May 31, all productive activities in the Los Lagos Region related to the coastline will be paralyzed in rejection of the Marine Spaces for Indigenous Peoples.

At the beginning of the month, salmon workers, artisanal fishermen, shore collectors, different actors in mythology, indigenous communities, residents of Quellón and truck drivers joined together to march against Coastal Marine Spaces for Native Peoples, ECMPO, which are being requested in Chiloé and that would affect these key economic activities for the area. And now, the mobilizations will be repeated, next May 31 from Puerto Montt.

In Quellón, today four ECMPOs are being requested, called Compu, Chanco, Borde Costero Muelle Conectividad and Isla Linauac, while in Ancud, one called Linao is requested. All of these will be voted for approval or rejection on Friday of the following week at the Los Lagos Regional Coastal Edge Use Commission.

For this reason, all these leaders met with the Presidential Delegate for Los Lagos, Giovanna Moreira, to whom they informed of the mishandling that is being given to the controversial Lafkenche Law and requested that the ECMPOs detailed above be rejected.

“We want the curtain to be lowered on the ECMPO requests that will be voted on on May 31, because they involve more than 1.6 million hectares of coastal border, contrasting with almost 70% of the productive and labor sources linked to the territory. maritime,” said Marta Oyarzo, spokesperson for the Salmon Workers Coordinator.

“We hope that the Government has the solidity and responsibility to ensure the common good, not to generate more labor disruptions, which would worsen the regional situation,” said Oyarzo, adding that the call for mobilizations on May 31 will be massive: Puerto Rico has been confirmed. Montt and another group is evaluated for Quellón.

While the lonko Juan Huaiquil made it clear that “on May 31 all activities will be paralyzed due to the ECMPO vote that is being requested mainly in Quellón. We call on the entire population to mobilize, we want to live in harmony, so that the coastline belongs to all Chileans to grow.”

Victorio Cerón, leader of artisanal fishing, called on the Government to reject these ECMPO requests, as long as there is no modification to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Law, and that clear rules are generated for regional productive development, removing uncertainty that surrounds the activities of the coastal edge.
