On behalf of the people of Cuba, the members of the Political Bureau Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, and Manuel Marrero Cruz, prime minister, arrived yesterday at the residence of the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Havana to sign the book of condolences, after the death of the president of that country, on May 19.

The representatives of the Cuban State and Government conveyed their deepest condolences to the Iranian Government, Assembly and people, as well as to family and friends of the victims of the tragic accident: the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, and other senior leaders who accompanied him.

Lazo Hernández hoped that they would find the necessary strength to cope with these sensitive losses. “In this difficult moment, please receive the testimony of our highest consideration and esteem, in honor of the historical relations based on mutual respect and solidarity, dating back more than 40 years between our countries and peoples,” he wrote.

For his part, Marrero Cruz described the Iranian president as “a friend and brother,” and stated that the sister Islamic Republic of Iran can count on “our support and solidarity in this moment of pain. “I am sure that you will know how to overcome this hard blow.”

After the signing of the book by both leaders, Seyed Mohammad Hadi Sobbani, ambassador of Iran, thanked the Cuban authorities and its people for the gesture. He added that it is appropriate to continue the political legacy of Ebrahim Raisi and continue consolidating bilateral ties between both countries.

Likewise, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta arrived yesterday in Tehran, Iran, as a special envoy of President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to convey the support and solidarity of the Cuban people after the physical disappearance of President Raisi and other senior leaders.

During his term as President since 2021, Ebrahim Raisi contributed decisively to the development and strengthening of relations of friendship and cooperation. After hearing the news of his death, Díaz-Canel declared an official mourning in Cuba.
