ETECSA assures that Internet access in Cuba is “subsidized”

The only Telecommunications company in Cuba, ETECSA, left numerous headlines this week, with the statements of Lidia Esther Hidalgo Rodríguez, Commercial Vice President of this entity. One of them was that they assured that Internet access in Cuba is “subsidized.”

Hidalgo Rodríguez highlighted that ETECSA is going through a “complex financial situation” as it faces difficulties in obtaining fresh foreign currency, essential resources to make investments that allow improving connectivity and the quality of services.

In other words, as we clarify here, the official specified that without money and foreign currency they cannot invest in improving the Internet connection on the island and, incidentally, the quality of a service that they do not charge cheaply, although they insist that they are practically subsidizing.

Yes, ETECSA insists that Internet access from Cuba is subsidized.

“There is the national cost, since the basic data package is 110 pesos for a gigabyte, on average, but this internet access is paid in foreign currency to the international provider and, therefore, “It is a subsidized cost for the user,” they specified.

Internet cost in Cuba subsidized?

What do Cuban users of ETECSA believe about this assessment of the Cuban Telecommunications company? Is the cost and access of the Internet to Cuba really “subsidized”?

“Personally, I am tired of justifications, I urgently need the service”, “And where is the money for international recharges?”, or “It’s incredible, nothing works in this country and everything is a theft”, were some reactions of Cubans to these assertions by ETECSA.

Added to this problem are the growing frauds that affect the company, as they also explained in these statements this week.

According to them, websites have been detected that clone Etecsa’s identity and offer recharge options from abroad. These fraudulent practices not only harm the company financially, but also put the safety of users at risk, they warned.
