Five years after its premiere, a series of tiktoks has risen one unauthorized version of Harry Potter with very low budget visual effects. Each episode of MD Entertainment’s Indonesian series ‘Alpha’ begins with a warning that the resemblance to other characters and settings is purely coincidental, and proceeds to shamelessly copy the work of JK Rowling.

Some differences: The Indonesian series lasts 42 hours and follows the adventures of Alpha (Harry), Vega (Hermione) and Rey (Ron). Alpha is an adopted child living in the attic of an abusive family when an eagle hands him an invitation to the Bincka School of Magic. As his family won’t let him go, an Indonesian version of Hagrid arrives to break down the door, knocking Aunt Petunia unconscious.
Alpha accompanies the beardless Hagrid to a fake Diagon Alley that is actually a fruit market. Instead of a magic wand, Alpha receives a banana… which later transforms into a wand. They then travel to a magical world that is literally an amusement park (goers to the park can be seen watching the actors during filming).
This is where Alpha meets Vega and Rey. Instead of a magical boat, the trio arrive at their version of Hogwarts on a funfair ride. At Hogwarts they will meet the direct Agni (a less charismatic Dumbledore) and Professor Aldebaran (a young and attractive Minerva McGonagall). Also to Tommy, the Draco Malfoy of this low cost magical world, and an enigmatic Snape attentively following the ceremony of the Sombre selector.
The first few episodes follow the plot of the original Harry Potter movie, but instead of magical broomsticks, the young wizards fly around on giant candies and candies. My favorite part is when they go up against the dungeon troll, a sequence with more drama than the original, but with the most pathetic CGI imaginable.
Although the story ends up slightly deviating from its inspiration, you won’t be able to look away from the first few episodes, especially if you speak Indonesian.
