LOGROÑO, June 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Fundación Ecolec, a non-profit organization that focuses its activity on the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), has managed in La Rioja the figure of 621 tons of said waste managed during 2023, which represents the collection of 6.04 kilos per inhabitant.

For Luis Moreno, general director of the ECOLEC Foundation, this data “highlights the commitment of Riojans to the recycling of WEEE, the Environment and the Circular Economy.”

On the other hand, Of the total tons managed in La Rioja (621), the vast majority correspond to the domestic sphere (520) while the rest (101) belong to the professional sphere.

According to the United Nations, the generation of electronic waste in the world is increasing five times faster than its recycling. In 2022, a record of 62 million tons of WEEE was broken, a figure that would fill 1.55 million 40-ton trucks, according to The Global E-Waste Mionitor 2024 report.

The generation of this waste grows by 2.6 million tons every year, so in 2030 the total generation will be up to 82 million tons.

“There is much evidence that shows that the recycling of our WEEE is essential. For example, a poorly recycled refrigerator emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere equivalent to the emissions of a car over 15,000 kilometers,” stressed Luis Moreno.

Furthermore, he wanted to emphasize that “the consequences of not correctly recycling our electronic devices when they stop working are aggravated in those parts of the planet where the extraction of raw materials to manufacture these products produces serious social impacts.”

All electrical devices that are used on a daily basis can have a second life if they are recycled correctly. Each user becomes the main actor in a process in which an appropriate end can be given that, on the one hand, offers the possibility of reuse and, on the other hand, helps with sustainable, responsible and respectful disassembly and decontamination. with the environment.
