Ignacio Echevarría has, in the Logroño skate park that bears his name, an allusive plaque that was discovered this Monday, the seventh anniversary of his death in a terrorist attack in London.

The Logroño skete track has been called ‘Skatepark Ignacio Echeverría’ since 2018 “and today we want to place this plaque in his memory in this sense and simple tribute from all Riojans to the ‘skateboard hero’ who 7 years ago today lost his life to save that of many others,” said the first mayor of Logroño.

«It is our way of remembering and honoring a young man who was an example of bravery and altruism. “His heroic act saving the lives of others will not be forgotten, and his generous spirit will continue to be present in our city,” he also added.

The representative of the family has alluded to the family’s commitments on a day like today, June 3, among them, the anniversary mass for the death, although he has provided an audio of Ignacio’s father, Joaquín, in which he thanked the city of Logroño the events it celebrates in his memory.

“We want his death to have been worth it,” said Joaquín Echevarría. “And the fact that he is on the streets will keep him in the conscience of many people,” he also said, to finally insist on his gratitude for perpetuating his name in public places.

Escobar has given a replica of the plaque to Aitor Miranda to give to the family. Ignacio Echeverría died at the age of 39 in the London attacks in June 2017, when he confronted several terrorists with his skateboard.

Representatives of associations of victims of terrorism and representatives of security forces have also witnessed the event. To unveil the plaque, the mayor also had the presence of several skaters.

Once the event was over, he requested the participation of the representative of the Diocese, given the opening of an open canonization procedure “which I personally congratulate and join,” Escobar concluded.
