Today the jury trial for the murder of Gonzalo Moreno will begin, which occurred in the context of a shooting in the Las Mil Viviendas neighborhood of the Capital city in August 2022. The debate will take place in the room of the Management Office of Hearings (OGA) of the Judicial Branch, located on Colón Avenue. The accused are family members: Ariel Aragón is accused of the crime of “homicide aggravated by the use of a firearm”; the other suspect, for “weapon abuse.”
Because the person accused of “weapon abuse” was a teenager at the time of the incident, the case was processed in the area of Juvenile Criminal Justice. For that same reason his identity is not revealed.
The judge of the Sixth Judicial District, Nancy Corina Pérez, will be the director of the process. The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) will be represented by juvenile criminal prosecutor Guillermo Narváez. The accused will be defended by lawyer Pedro Vélez. Meanwhile, the lawyer Natalia Páez Vaca will be involved in the complaint.
During the development of the investigation, Aragón was detained with preventive detention in the Provincial Penitentiary Service (SPP) of Miraflores, in the Capayán department. And although he was able to regain freedom for a few days, he was later imprisoned again. This is how he comes to the debate: as a detainee. His relative is free.

– August 28, 2022. There was a fierce confrontation between gangs at the suspects’ home. According to the first investigations, a disorder of great magnitude would have occurred. The balance was three people injured; one of them, Moreno, a 25-year-old young man, received a gunshot wound to the head. He was admitted to the San Juan Bautista Hospital in serious condition.
– August 30, 2022. Moreno was declared brain dead. The arrest of the main accused is confirmed -in principle for injuries-.
– September 1, 2022. Young Moreno dies. Aragón is accused of “homicide aggravated by the use of a firearm.” The teenager was charged with “weapon abuse.”
– June 30, 2023. After the 10-month period expired, Aragón’s preventive detention expired and he regained his freedom.
– July 25, 2023. Juvenile criminal prosecutor Guillermo Narváez appealed the release of the young accused.
– September 8, 2023. The main defendant in the Las Mil shooting returns to prison. The Juvenile Criminal Appeals Chamber confirmed the elevation to trial for “homicide aggravated by the use of a firearm.”
