Floods in El Charco, Nariño, wreak havoc on homes, schools and crops

Nearly 1,000 families from the El Castigo and Rosario villages, located along the Tapaje River, were seriously affected by the recent flooding of this river. The water increased its flow until it reached more than 5 meters high, wreaking havoc on homes, schools and destroying crops and livestock. The situation has triggered a humanitarian emergency in the Sanquianga Subregion.

Given the emergency situation caused by the intense rains in the District of Tumaco and the Municipalities of Barbacoas and El Charco, a special commission led by the Secretary of Government Benildo Estupiñán and the Director of the Administrative Directorate of Disaster Risk Management DAGRD, Gabriel Ocaña traveled to the villages to see first-hand the extent of the damage and coordinate a comprehensive care route from the corresponding care agencies.

The Municipal Administration of El Charco, in collaboration with the DAGRD and relief agencies, will carry out a census process to evaluate the impacts of the situation in the 84 villages located along the banks of the Tapaje River that were also affected. In this way, a complete record will be obtained that facilitates the characterization of the remaining population and begins the delivery of humanitarian assistance that will mitigate the crisis.
