Governors’ Summit will address key issues for the Caribbean during the Córdoba Livestock Fair

Within the framework of the National Livestock Fair of Córdoba, Montería will host the Summit of Governors of the Colombian Caribbean, a space in which regional leaders will address strategic issues for the development of the region. The summit, which will take place on June 13 and 14, will also be attended by the mayors of the capital cities of the Caribbean.

The summit agenda will revolve around three main axes: peace with security, climate change and response to the La Niña phenomenon. Regarding the first point, the public order situation in the region will be analyzed and joint strategies will be proposed to confront problems such as crime, micro-trafficking and the presence of illegal armed groups.

Regarding climate change, the governors will discuss policies and actions to mitigate its impact in the Caribbean, one of the most vulnerable regions of the country against this phenomenon. It is expected that the leaders will reach agreements on issues such as risk management, the adaptation of productive sectors and the implementation of clean energy.

The third axis of the summit will be the response to the La Niña phenomenon, which has caused heavy rains and floods in much of the region. Faced with this, Erasmo Zuleta Bechara, governor of Córdoba, pointed out that “we need to know specifically what the national government has and how from the territories we access those benefits.” It is expected that at the summit joint lines of action will be defined and efforts will be coordinated between the national government and local administrations to address this emergency.

The Caribbean Governors’ Summit has been positioning itself as a key space for the coordination of regional policies and the management of resources before the national government. On this occasion, the leaders are expected to reach significant agreements regarding the most pressing challenges in the region, taking advantage of the visibility offered by the Córdoba Livestock Fair.

The holding of this meeting within the framework of the fair also seeks to position Córdoba as the epicenter of regional decisions and make its potential in agriculture, tourism and culture visible to the other departments of the Caribbean.
