Yesterday the news of the death of Vittorio Vargiuwho was a prominent local businessman and a great disseminator of Italian and Sardinian culture.

He was born in Ozieri, Sardinia, and at the age of 12 he emigrated with his family to Tucumán. At the age of 25 he met Sara Paz, who at that time was studying Philosophy. And shortly after, she became his wife.

Sara joined the family, where she learned to enjoy Sardinian cuisine from her mother-in-law, whom she affectionately called “Nonna Pietruccia”, as her grandchildren did. From there came the name of a renowned restaurant that the family opened and that became famous for the flavor of its pasta.

Vargiu and Sara founded together, almost four decades ago, the Sardinian Circle of Tucumán, of which Vittorio was president. He was also a founding member of the Lega Sarda Argentina and later of the Federation of Sardinian Circles. He was also a member of the Committee of Italians Abroad and the Consiglio Generale degli Italiani all’Estero.

He was decorated twice by Italy, the first time with the rank of Cavaliere del Lavoro e della Solidarietà and the second time as Grand Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana.

Vargiu produced the Oggitalia program for more than 20 years, uninterruptedly, since 1988. He appeared on different stations: LV12, Radio Nacional, 93.9, Radio 10 and Radio Milenium. He had his wife, Sara, as a scriptwriter and his daughter Viviana as a host, while he served as a columnist.

In 1989, Oggitalia magazine was born, which was bilingual, was made by hand, with illustrations by Domingo Beltrán Marras and was distributed in all the Sardinian Circles in Argentina. And in 2001, Oggitalia TV.
