The rains in the central area of the country have once again generated serious consequences. One of them was a sinkhole on the side of a tower in the Reñaca area, in the commune of Viña del Mar. This ended with the evacuation of more than 80 people.
What is striking is that this is the third time that this same phenomenon has occurred in said sector. In this regard, in “It Could Be Worse” we spoke with the Mayor Macarena Ripamontiwho referred to what happened.
The municipal authority began by stating that “what we pointed out last time is demonstratively confirmed. There is an urbanization process that is probably older than I have been alive and a series of circumstances that have to be reflected“.
Later, Ripamonti maintained that “now, there is effectively a collapse of the structure. This sinkhole passes under the building and puts many things at risk, most importantly, people’s lives,” adding that “the important thing is that the Serviu can initiate an expert report to identify what has happened.”
The interviewee stated that “all rainwater collectors need to be monitored, repaired and require maintenance.” Given this scenario, Macarena indicated that many times these tasks are not done.
Along these same lines, the policy said that “there is a greater risk as a result of the same composition of the land and the dune changes with the water… My concern is that the solutions are going to be to divert other sinkholesthe one a little further and we are going to end up recharging the entire capacity of the channel.”
Finally, the mayor expressed that “this draws attention because it is the dunes, because it is Viña, because it is evident what is happening and it is very dramatic, but collector collapse happens everywhere“.
